Why can't Comcast just admit that they are having local problems with Internet? Why can't they inform the people on the phones? Why do I have to navigate a gauntlet of recorded voice prompts and endure bad music with repetitive announcements when I phone them? Why do they charge $2 if you want to pay your bill by phone? Why do they lie about their download speeds? Shouldn't some of those things be illegal?

We even had a tech here today and I have a new modem and a new splitter. The next appointment on Monday will be with a "lead" tech. Hopefully he will replace the whole line from the pole, or know if Comcast's network is just screwing up.

Why Google is Good

An administrator was surprised I was allowing my students to do research using Google.

Google is not the same search engine that it was way back in 2005, when the other "more scholarly" databases were "better".

I suggest you read or listen to the book Googled: The End of the World As We Know It, by Ken Aluetta.

Actually there are several things to consider in relationship to education.

First, if we are teaching real world success, everybody Googles. Outside of school, most people don't have access to premium databases. They Google. College students Google. College professors and researchers Google. You and I Google several times per day. These facts make it even more important for students to distinguish between reliable and questionable Google results. (By the way, most Google results are no longer as questionable as they used to be because of second reason below...)

Second, Google's goal is to give the best search results possible, by cataloging the entire Internet, then using "the wisdom of the herd" to determine what is important. They call their data gathering algorithms Page Rank (after founder Page), and it really works. The best results really do come out on top. The more people use Google, the better it gets. Irrelevant results go down the list because nobody clicks them. Relevant links move up because more people find them relevant to their search terms and search history.

Third, Google really has concentrated most of its resources on free search, and wants you to find what you are looking for and get off their site as fast as possible. They have made it easier to find what you are looking for, and have made results more accurate, in order to reach this goal. It can be argued that paid-for databases have the goal to keep you on their site, so you take their results, even if it isn't what you really want and even if it is old info. Their privatized results are biased by the contributors to their sites, who are either paying or getting paid. Google isn't getting paid by anyone they link in a search result - results and placement are not influenced by payment at all. (That is what killed the other search engines.)

Fourth, Google has Google Scholar, Google Books, Google News, images and videos - all accessible by a single search. Can any paid-for database match that? Even the ads served by Google, since they are unobtrusive and contextual, can aid a search result.

Finally, we are in a budget crisis. Stop paying for databases and online reference sources, unless they are obtained via grant funds.

So when the administrator said today, Mr. G., they are Googling! I have to say, especially for a 9th grade special needs class with many students that claim to never have written a multiple page report, yes they are Googling - and it is good.

Upgraded to Windows 7

I upgraded to Windows 7 last month - and it is much better than Vista. No big problems. I have to admit that, especially after my previous post about my complaints about Vista. Windows 7 is faster and more stable than Vista. I still don't like the nag screen when starting non-native programs like Dreamweaver. But it is better than XP and I think I can live with it.

I bought a Gateway referbished laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium. I have heard horror stories about Vista, and one of the reasons I chose this particular laptop is it came with a free upgrade to Windows 7. I am waiting for it to be shipped to me, as the Gateway web site says of my shipment: "Fulfillment in process."

In the meantime I figured I would give it a real try before succumbing to the bandwagon of Vista haters. In the past week, Vista has not been totally horrible. It looks a little slick, and feels a little like a Mac or Linux in it's differentness. But there are three things that bother me:

1. Vista misreports my hard drive size. My hard drive is 320 GB. Vista reports it at 289 GB. And, yes, I do have it set to show hidden folders and have unhidden system files. There is no other partition, and I have reset the shadow file size to 10 GB. That is a missing 20 GB. I understand they round up when hard drives are marketed, but not 60 GB of rounding. Well, it is a referb after all - maybe they messed up the hard drive formatting and it isn't a Vista problem?

2. Vista has new updates every day, and they usually require a restart.

3. Every time I start certain programs there is a nag screen that says Windows needs my permission to start this unidentified program. It happens with DreamweaverMX 2004, for example. I thought that once you told Vista it was a safe program, the nag would go away. But it hasn't. And I can't find a way to tell Vista that I don't want that warning to display.

So far, I have one piece of hardware that is incompatible; a web cam. I have not tried my printer or scanner with Vista yet, but that point is moot because this laptop doesn't even have a parallel port. I will be using those peripherals from my older desktop.

First Snow On Saturday, 51 Miles Road Cycling On Sunday

We got a wet half inch or so on Saturday. On Sunday, by 10:30 AM the sun was shining, though it was cold. The roads seemed dry outside my house. So I bundled up for a road ride on my vintage 1986 Cannondale road bike. I purposely inflated the tires 5 PSI low for better traction and headed for the hills.

Watchung Reservation had a lot of snow in the woods and it was really pretty up there. The road surfaces were a wet in the hills for the first hour, so I was hesitant about descending fast, thinking that I might eat pavement by hitting some black ice or snow. There were ice chunks falling from the trees that kinda stung when then hit me.

The roads were mostly dry after that first hour, and I felt good, so I decided to go longer than I had planned. After a pit stop at a Lukeoil station for the bathroom and eating the Cliff Bar in my pocket, I felt even better. I saw only about 5 other guys out there for cycling workouts, even though it was a very enjoyable day.

There is still a lot of salt on my bike in the garage. Gotta get out there and wipe her down today. Here was my route:

2010 Training Plans Sheet Issue/Error

There is a problem with the sheet in the Thinnmann Excel Training Log on the sheet tabbed as "TRAINING PLANS".

When you attempt to update it to 2010, this sheet does not update.

It can be manually fixed right now by copy and pasting from an older version of the file before it became interactive.

If you would like me to fix it for you, send me your copy via email and I will take care of it.

In the meantime, I will work on a fix and post it when it becomes available.

If you end your training weeks on Saturday, the My Plans worksheet was not moving data to the month sheets correctly. Fixed by Mr. Trilott and now integrated with Forever Beta2. 2009 Updated & Corrected Training Log Version Available for Download

One error was found and corrected by Trilott. If you downloaded the 2009 "Forever Beta" Excel Training Log version before 1:30 PM Eastern US Time on January 11, 2009, you may download the current version "Forever Beta1".

The problem was the Summary Mileage Graph did not work correctly if you chose your training weeks to end on Saturday. If this does not apply to you, and you end your training weeks on Sunday (the default) don't even worry about it.

If you do end your training weeks on Saturday, then download the newest version.

Some things to know - it is a zip file, to save bandwidth. If my server runs out of bandwidth, please let me know by posting a comment or sending me email.

There are two versions - one of them is for older versions of Excel, such as 5.0 and MS Office 95.

The primary version unzips to 1.2 MB. The older versions file unzips to 2.6 MB.

Added 2009:

1. Settings: An Excel Wizard is responsible for major upgrades this year. He is only known as "Trilott", and we all owe him our adimration and thanks. Trilott created the SETTINGS worksheet, where you enter the year of the log, the first date and day of the year. In otherwords, this log can be used for all years following! Make sure to keep one blank copy of the file for 2010 and beyond!

2. My Plans & Common Workouts: Trilott also modified the "My Plans" worksheet. In My Plans, you can plan your workout distances and they will appear in the "Plan" column on the monthly training worksheets. Related to this, Trilott created a "Common Workouts" worksheet. If you type names for your common workouts, they will appear in a drop-down menu on the My Plans worksheet.

3. Race Page: Trilott added a page to record race results and it will keep track of your Personal Records for various distances.

4. Bike Tracker: Thinnmann added a bike mileage tracker worksheet. Works like the Shoe Tracker. Enter your bikes in the Bike Tracker worksheet, then indicate the bike you ride when recording cycling workouts on the Cycle & Swim worksheet.

I appreciate all the emails and comments about the Excel Training Log. I know you all have been patiently waiting. I know I have dragged my heels on this a little. I didn't do it before an eight day ski vactaion during the holidays. I thought I would get it done during the vacation. But I was having too good a time for that.

BUT THERE ARE GREAT IMPROVMENTS TO BE POSTED!

A user of this Excel Training Log, who happens to be an Excel UberUser, made some killer improvements. They are improvements that will have you never have to wait for the next year's update again! I am working on fully integrating his improvements, though still remain in awe of his Excel skills.

Hopefully, a version will be posted within the next 24 hours.

Chill - get a run or ride or swim in - and write it down on paper. You can catch up on the first week of January in a few strokes of your keyboard.

Week off of school for everyone. Science teacher walking down the hallway towards me, half hour before required starting time. Me just off the bike, on my way to the shower. I say, "Good morning~!" I would have some in my running bag, so that is why I am working hard thinking about if I have any with me now. Finally I say no. Why I am Boycotting Dunkin' Donuts

A lot of people have asked me why I am leading a personal boycott of their beloved Dunkin' Donuts.

I really believe DD has expanded too quickly. There is hardly a suburban street without one here in NJ. As a result, their product quality has dropped and has been very inconsistent. Their service has suffered. They are putting the independent "mom & pop" shops out of business.

Did you know that just one DD bagel = FIVE daily bread servings? Nobody needs that. Did you see the fat content of the foods?... Nutrition info is on their web site and it is not good.

The only reasons DD remains successful are ones we should all fight against to uphold everyone's quality-of-life: 1.) Familiarity to the Public because of evil corporate induced similarity and advertising, 2.) Drive-Thrus that add convenience along with unnecessary carbon emissions, 3.) Caffeine & sugar addiction.

I recently learned that their business practices are highly questionable. According to this NY Daily News article:

In fact, Dunkin' Donuts has sued other franchise owners 154 times since 2006.

Over the same stretch of time, McDonald's was involved in five lawsuits. And Subway, a company that has four times the number of locations as Dunkin' Donuts, sued its franchises 12 times.

After talking to dozens of franchise owners just like us, we learned that this was more than an unusual litigation binge. This was a corporate strategy.

In order to compete with Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts has announced a plan to open 15,000 stores by 2016. There's only one problem with that plan. Because Dunkin' Donuts is made up entirely of franchisee-owned stores, it relies on franchisees to open new stores.
Only large, multiunit owners who already own dozens of stores have the means to expand quickly.

Dunkin's answer to this conundrum is to systematically replace single-store owners with multistore owners. And because they can't just force these mom-and-pop shops to sell, they strong-arm them with threats of lawsuits over minor "contract infractions."

The consequences of this are real, personal and painful. The owners of these stores - who overwhelmingly tend to be immigrants - lose their entire life's work.

So, if quality and nutrition concerns don't move you, maybe fighting corporate greed will. Join me in my personal boycott, and let me know about it. Thanks!

Leap Year Error Fixes for my Excel Training Log

Hello users of my Excel training log!

Sorry about this, but if you downloaded my 2008 Excel training log before March 13, 2008 there were two errors in weekly totals on the summary sheet. (The log that is currently available for download has been corrected.)

Did you know it was Leap Year?... well, that is what caused my fast edit of the summary page to have errors that I didn't notice.

If you noticed them and fixed them already, that is great! If you did not notice, here is what needs to be done:

1. Go to the summary sheet
2. Click into cell C10
3. Cell C10 should say =Feb!M19
4. Correct it and strike the Enter key
5. That should put you in cell C11
6. Cell C11 should say =Feb!M26

One other user noticed errors on the Shoes sheet, but I have not been able to duplicate them on my uploaded versions. If anyone else is having errors on the shoes sheet, please let me know.

Any other feedback is welcome.

The 2008 Excel Training Log Is Posted!

Directions for using this training log:

Enter as much or as little information as you like. Originally designed as a running log, the main focus of this log continues to be for tracking your daily running mileage for one or two workouts daily. It will track your running time and calculate your pace per mile. It will accrue your weekly, monthly, and yearly total distance. It will create a chart for your weekly mileage. It will track the number of mileage you have on up to six pairs of shoes. Most functions are fairly self-explanatory. Some cells are explained through the use of mouse-over pop-up comments. If you measure your distances in kilometers, just enter them and all the formulas will work just fine; pace per kilo will result instead of per mile, for example.

Added 2008:
Yearly totals for cycling and swimming distance. Training planning space for three sports.

Please send me your email address so I can notify you if there are any updates to this file! Just let me know that you are a user. I will not spam you or use your email for anything else but updates. Sorry, I am a procrastinator and I have been skiing a lot. Please use paper for a few days until I get the 2008 Training Log posted. If I have your email address, I will let you know when it is available for download.

You may be aware, that when I started this project some years ago, the online training logs were not around. There are now tons of sites with online training logs that may suit your needs. The advantage of an Excel log is that you do not have to be online to use it, and you can customize it as you wish.

There is another excellent Excel running log available for download from David Hayes, an Excel god. You can start Hayes's log any time. It tracks a lot more information. Though it is clearly superior to mine in detail, I don't think I could keep up with all the data that one could enter, and I like my monthly configuration.

Musical Taste Ecclectic?

I know I have a goofy musical taste. I enjoy punk, rockabilly, classic rock, folk, reggae and ELP. I enjoy new and very old stuff. So I found this site for people with musical taste as goofy as mine. It is a blog with a great reviewer called "Ryp", great album art, and great tunes. Check out the Twilight Zone blog! Enjoy tracks "rypped" from rare vinyl like the "Desperate Rock-N-Roll" and "Strumin' Mental" volumes. And other stuff...

Scholastic red Training

The trainer came yesterday to train me to be the Scholastic red facilitator. It looks like a great program if we can get several teachers to apply the methods systematically within out school. The program concentrates on getting students to actively participate in language and learning, rather than sit passively and avoid taking responsibility for ownership and usage of the language and classroom topics. The ideas about how to structure course content for effective delivery are all very similar to everything I have ever done - it involves accessing and building background knowledge and vocabulary skills. But the difference is in the design of the classroom techniques to get students to participate and use language skills. The real course content is in the introduction and practice of the classroom techniques. If a good number of the teachers in this school do this, then there would be quite an impact on our limited English speaking students.

The facilitator told me that the name of the program, "red" doesn't really mean anything. It was chosen by marketing people. It may have been chosen to be unconsciously associated with the other red products out there that are related to helping AIDS in Africa. Though there is no association at all with that program.

The Chicago Marathon

I am stupid. I would not have stopped. After spending all that time in training and travel, and after spending the amount of money it costs these days to do a marathon, and after having the background I do as a runner, I would have been pissed off if I was forced to stop running the race.

But perhaps I think different. The people who had to stop were the (slap me if I am being politically incorrect) slower runners. I do not disrespect them. I understand that their race is as difficult and as important to them as the faster runners. I am even joining the ranks of the slower runners at this point in my life. The slower runners are still fitter and more courageous than 99.9% of the rest of the population of this planet.

And it is hard to imagine the real scene there. There is a great slideshow at the Chicago Tribune web site (thanks to them for the screen cap) that can make some impact for those of us that were not there.

My Roxio Easy DVD software kept failing as I was trying to burn Linux install CD's from iso file downloads. After wasting three blank CD's, I decided to look around to find something free to do it better. I found this ISO Recorder. It installs as part of the Windows XP user interface, and uses the right click menu to launch a wizard for burning CD's using Windows XP's inherent capabilities. Great stuff.

Damn Small Linux

Been playing around with Linux again. Gotta get some of my old boxes out to eBay, and with a good Linux install they are liable to sell. Tried Damn Small Linux, which takes only 50MB on a CD or other media to run on a machine. So far it has failed on an old Gateway Solo notebook. Doesn't run the flat panel well enough to see the system.

We give the Big High School Passing Test in early October for the students that did not pass last school year. They are seniors in high school. If they pass this October's administration, then they can get out of the SRA (Student Review Assessment) process class they have been assigned. SRA is a safety net that gets many students their diploma even though they do not pass The Test.

I wil be a proctor for the test. Our on-site Test aministrator asked me if I could bring in a clock for the testing room. I asked what was wrong with the room clock. I was told there must be two clocks in the room. I offered a bedroom digital alarm clock, but it can not be a digital clock.

I suggested that the school should put out the $20 or so that it would cost to buy a few clocks at Target. The test administrator thought I was giving her a hard time about this, but I was really just trying to solve a problem that probably goes beyond just me. "It is only the most important thing we do around here and we can't spend some petty cash on clocks for The Test?" I asked rhetorically. She responded in a very strange way, pulling rank saying, "You know you are talking to a 'principal' in this situation. I was only asking if you had a clock, and now I am sorry I asked."

Easing In

We have really eased into the school year. The first week of school began on a Thursday after Labor Day for the students. A two day week. The second week ran Monday through Wednesday, with Thursday and Friday off for Rosh Hashanah. This is the first five-day week. Hope I can get through it!

So I have taken it into my own hands to go into some classes to work with students and teachers. Second period for SRA, 7th & 8th for regular junior classes, and 9th for special needs 11th grade. It was difficult to find classes that do not already have "in class support" teachers. Too many teachers gets confusing.

Not much has happened on the school front. I am waiting on tables, chairs, bookshelves, a wireless laptop computer cart, media projector and screen. The thing that is holding things up is protocol. The school board meeting is tonight. Technically, I don't even have the position as Literacy Lab teacher until I am approved at the meeting tonight. Once that approval goes through, then administrators can actually talk with me about the job.

Yes, the wheels of education move very slowly....

Two-Lane Blacktop

I watched a few movies last week, all of which I had seen before, but I saw so much more in them this time around.

The first one was Two-Lane Blacktop. I love this movie for so many reasons. It is an existential work in the guise of a hippie-escapist road movie. Nothing happens in the movie, yet so much depends upon feeling the reality of the moment. The movie sucks you in because it is like really watching something that is happening to real people.

I was going to write more about the movie, but anyone can read the excellent reviews and commentaries at the Internet Movie Database.

AS I was looking for resources for Two-Lane Blacktop, I found trailers and clips on You-Tube, and a Rob Zombie song that was inspired by the movie. It has been home-made into you-tube videos included in my Two-Lane Blacktop playlist below.

First Day

School year is beginning. No big difference from past years. We come in - the teachers, that is - and have a morning meeting. The principal and vice-principal explain things that we could have just read on a piece of paper. One big change is that lesson plans have to show 4 days of homework per week, and they have to be done in electronic format, MS Word. I have been doing it that way, but for some teachers this is a challenge, believe it or not.

After the meeting there is more of nothing. Some teachers have to set up their room. I am lucky, having nothing to set up. I just got my desktop PC up and running, and had to undo some of the physical changes made by the Tech Dept this summer. They took all the wires and zip-tied them too tight. I could not move any parts of the computer nor any of my desk elements because of it.

The reason I did not have to set up my room is that it is mostly empty. All the student desks have been removed. I am waiting for computer desks, computers, maybe even some books and bookshelves. I am in a new position in a room that is being reinvented as a "Literacy Lab". I am not sure what I am going to be doing yet. I assume I will be working with all the students from the regular English classes. However the goals and scheduling has not been figured out yet. So that is what this blog is about - figuring all the details out. It will also be an account of the Plato Learning system that the school district is buying into.

I was told in an interview this summer - though not directly because it had not been posted yet - that I was the person they wanted to run this program, Scholastic Red, a literacy program based in professional development. It has been replaced with Plato. So I will be writing about more details as they come out. In the meantime, I am making it up as I go along.

It’s a sad day when one great American cyclist, the first to win the Tour de France, goes into a courtroom to testify against the current Tour de France champion. I take no pleasure or happiness in writing this post. For me, this is one of the blackest moments in the history of professional cycling in the United States.

I have followed the hearing today, and nobody could have written a fiction that could have rivaled what happened today. If a writer went to a publishing company with a proposal that said something like, "I have an idea for a book about a cycling champion who is accused of doping, and a former cycling champion - a pioneering countryman of the accused - testifies that the accused one confessed to him because of a story about childhood sexual abuse, and the accused one's manager threatened the other using his own cell phone the night before he was to testify..." Said fiction writer would have been laughed out of the publisher's office!

Polygraph 'em all. The only thing missing from this debacle is the "...videotape." Ever since Lance Armstrong won the TDF, Lemond has tirelessly sought to impugn the character and credibility of Armstrong and now Landis. This much is certain. The halcyon days of American cycling appear to be long gone.

So, what is the prospect of Team Discovery Channel getting an American sponsor now? Perhaps this was Lemond's ulterior motive for testifying seeing Armstrong has an ownership interest in the team.

Everything that happened today seems to be the result of insinuation and subterfuge. Without an actually record of the alleged call between Landis and Lemond and without scientific voice identification, then it seems Lemond's testimony was sought by the USADA to illicit the effect obtained: to get the focus away form the lab's bad science....

Ultimately, truth is never about science. Science, like everything else, is servant to the agenda of those in power. I fear Landis is being made an open show (since he requested the public hearing) so that no athlete subject to ADA will choose this route in the future. I believe Landis is being sacrificed, and there are far too many sick people on both sides of the pond that love to have it so. Fear and intimidation and very strong tools for control and will be more successful in curbing future doping than good science.

My wife was not feeling well. She went to bed early at about 9:30 P.M. My 12-year-old son's tooth had been loose for a couple weeks. He had gone to bed a little after 9:00. He was probably moving the tooth around and it came out. He put the tooth into a tissue, and put it under his pillow without telling anyone. ...and the tooth fairy did not come. He woke up this morning to a that hard, expected, unmagical lesson. And the story was related to me by my 8-year-old daughter, who told me, "The tooth fairy didn't come last night." Lesson learned by her too.

Teeth fall out. Magic falls out. The end of an era. And so it goes.

Ski day #1

Belleayre was super today. Not many people and two runs top to lift 7. See-sawed between Onteora and Wanatuska. No lines today, so I got maybe 25 runs in 5 hours. Big bumps on Onteora on top. They were forgiving - the snow was very springlike. Started skiing on the old $15 Elan SCX's I had from an eBay auction last year. I wanted to checkout the condition and would consider these expendable "rock skis". I also wanted to get my desire for some linked slalom turns fulfilled. After an hour and about 5 runs, I had lunch and switched skis to the Volkl P40 skis I picked up on eBay this September. They were AWESOME! They were the best skis I ever skied on for edge hold and control and speed. The only thing they could not do was short turns, which is to be expected with a GS ski. They were stellar in the bumps, which was totally unexpected for a stiff racing ski! I think it is because of the edge hold and the riser on the binding, which gave me lots of leverage.

On my rides up I learned from some ski patrol guys that the Superchief midstation was removed and that the Liftline trail under Tomahawk lift is top to bottom - hey, there is a cliff up there! Extreme skiing? We shall see...

I am here at jury duty. It really sucks. We have sat here so far for 2 1/2 hours and have done nothing. I was worried about getting here on time. I had to drop off Caitlin earlier than usual to make it here by the time they said on the phone: 8:30 A.M. I pulled into the parking deck late. I actually checked in at about 8:45. I learned that one does not really have to get here until 9:15 or so. Then, a woman got up and explained the whole day schedule after showing us a video that explained and role played the jury process. It was very rah-rah The Process.

11:18 - "Two of our civil trials have been resolved. We are waiting for one more for the morning." That was the announcement. If we are all lucky, we will go to lunch soon without having to be picked on any jury.

There are probably 150 people here. The overwhelming impression I get from looking at the group is that it is in no way representative of the general population of this area. There are 8 people who do not fit this description: white, middle-class, 40-60 years old. I wonder how that can be a "jury of your peers".

It is a beautiful day outside. We were allowed a 20 minute "coffee break", so I went for a walk. The Somerset County courthouse complex buildings and campus is very beautiful. It is a mix of architectural styles that reflect the growth of the area. There is the original classical styled pre-twentieth century courthouse. Added to that is the building we are in, an 18th century church that was bought by the county. It has all the original architecture - including religious stained-glass windows and 20 foot high pipes for an organ. Church and state comes together here in an ironic marriage of historical preservation. Connecting these two older buildings is a large modern office building behind them that houses the county offices. Glass walkways lead into these older structures. The campus itself has a plush lawn and a "Time to Remember" monument area. This circular commons-like area has a set of pillars and a clock, with benches surrounding. There were three fat cops sitting there, one with the requisite shaved head, all with the reflective glasses. I am not sure if it was a war memorial, public service memorial for police and fire, or a 9-11 memorial. I didn't stop long enough to read. Observing the stereotypical cops was more interesting than the monument. The town of Somerville is full of old consignment, special-interest, and hobby stores. Lots of little food places. I never saw so many little businesses clustered like that. Low rent or taxes here to support them?

Planning an Essay

1. I disagree with the proposal to extend the school day for all students. Students that perform poorly on standardized tests should have the school day lengthened, however.

2. Students and teachers would experience fatigue and loss of focus. There would be diminishing returns as the hours went on.

3. Sports team practice would be limited. Participation in sports has been shown to increase academic achievement and the ability for a child to work as a team. Team sports improves the overall motivation and atmosphere in a school, hence the academic achievement is positively affected.

4. Money to pay the teachers and staff may not be in place. School budgets are already stretched. Teacher contracts would continue to not attract the best people if money to pay teachers was not present.

5. This proposal is unrealistic if applied to all students. However, extra instruction and individualized tutoring should be offered for students that are at risk of failure on tests or in subject areas.

My son just doesn't get it yet. He gets phone calls from this nice girl in his class (6th grade math). She asks questions about the homework. He has the power and doesn't even know it yet. It's cute. Last night she wanted to know what paper to use and what the difference between a horizontal graph and a vertical graph was. Not very hard stuff to figure out.

I know now what it feels like to have intellectual property taken and used on the internet without one's permission. Cruising the Belleayre web site last night I discovered they are using one of my photos in their press picture section. This flatters me, yes, but it makes me mad that they did not ask my permission. I did give them permission to use my photos for the pic-of-the-day, but I sent them an email saying it was not an ongoing permission. This really pissed me off for some reason. I fired off an email to the webmaster and asked to be asked for permission for photos and given credit, or at least some Belleayre perks. I also volunteered to be an official Belleayre photographer in exchange for some perks. I wonder if I will get a response. To be continued?...

I am jonsing for some snow. Belleayre is supposed to open on November 5th, and have a Sam Adams sponsored party all afternoon. Last year they missed their projected opening date. Hopefully they will really have a run or two open on November 5th. A morning of skiing would be enough for the available terrain and rock skis, followed by some beer with Andy in the bar or on the deck. No kids on the 5th, because of conflicting activities - that would be so cool!

And we are in such an uproar about Katrina. We people in the USA just have not got a clue about what it means to suffer loss.

I can't even use my imagination about how the people in this country would react to such an earthquake with widespread death and devastation. I am hoping that our modern construction codes have anticipated how to handle earthquakes in places prone to them here in the United
States. I try to have my students and my own kids understand that level of loss, and they are more concerned about such mundane things. We are so short-sighted. We are so selfish. We are so without empathy. I am just as guilty. Damn.

I don't mean to seem unsympathetic, because I do feel bad for all the people who lost everything in Lousiana and Mississippi as a result of Katrina, but I am really getting angry about the stupidity and selfishness of the people who did not evacuate when they were told to. The cost of the rescue resources they are monopolizing that would be better used elsewhere should be charged to them - but that is impossible, of course, because they are overwhelmingly poor and now have less than they had before.

OK, they could not get out because they didn't have transportation - so you get out on the road and stick out your thumb! People come together and are cooperative during times of impending natural calamity. They had plenty of warning by the best forecasting science has to offer and they were warned by the authorities. Let's see: a category 4 or 5 hurricane is coming and my home is below sea level. Well duh, I can withstand 130 MPH winds so I am gonna stay and dodge flying 2X4's using my spider-senses.... jeeze.

So now this thing gets worse every day, and some people are even blaming the rescuers for being slow. But they shouldn't have to put themselves in harms way, and the people that need to be rescued should not even be there.

I really think New Orleans is done. Move the city to higher ground. Make a swimming pool out of its present location. Assist the citizens with free land and reduced housing. Exempt them from income tax for a few years. Reimburse them for moving costs if they choose to move to other cities.
